Choosing a Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth is a crucial component of your overall dental health. You already know the recommendations for brushing (at least twice per day, for at least two minutes each time) and have developed habits to incorporate this practice into your daily routine. However, did you know that you may be using the wrong toothbrush or inefficient toothpaste? Your tools for brushing are just as important as the habit itself, and the team at East Erie Dental is here to help. Here’s what you need to know about selecting toothbrushes and toothpaste.

One Size Does Not Fit All

Everyone is unique, and a toothbrush that is comfortable in your mouth may not be comfortable in another. Comfort is key here, so choose a toothbrush that you can navigate successfully in your mouth.

Soft Bristles For Everyone

You have multiple options for toothbrushes when it comes to bristles. Choose soft bristles to assure you are getting the most plaque and debris away from your gum line. Bristles that are stiff and not flexible could cause gum discomfort or bleeding, or lead you to skip that area altogether.

It’s Electric

If affordable and comfortable for you, choose an electric toothbrush when possible. This type of brush can be more effective for everyone, but especially kids and “lazy brushers”.

Fluoride Is Important

Now that you have your toothbrush, it is time to choose your toothpaste. This can be another personal decision but always look for a toothpaste that features fluoride to prevent cavities. Avoid kinds of toothpaste that add sweeteners, which is more common in toothpaste made for children.

Talk to Your Dentist

Your teeth and mouth are unique, and no one knows those better than your dentist. At your next check-up, talk to your dental team about your toothbrush and toothpaste recommendations, based on your specific situation.

Don’t have a dentist you love? Call the team at East Erie! We are accepting new patients and ready to partner with you to keep your smile bright and healthy.
