Keys to Cavity Prevention

You arrive at your dental office for your regular check-up. Things are going well, and your teeth are feeling sparkling clean, when you get the news – you have a cavity. While cavities are relatively common for most dental patients, hearing you have one is still unwelcome news. If you are hoping to avoid cavities in the future, here are a few ways to encourage dental health and decrease your chances of getting a cavity.

Brush Daily

Let’s start with the basics, as cavity prevention begins with healthy brushing habits. Best practices and recommendations point to brushing twice per day, for a minimum of two minutes each time. Aim for brushing in the morning and before bed, but feel free to brush after meals as well.

Add Flossing to Your Routine

Avoid cavities by keeping flossing at the center of your daily dental hygiene routine. We know, we know – flossing often flies under the radar for most of our patients. But the habit is an important one and can keep you free from cavities in the future. Floss at least daily.

Avoid Sugary Drinks

Cavities are caused by bacteria, and those bacteria love to feast on residual sugar on your teeth. Keep sugar away by avoiding sugary foods and drinks as much as possible. Stick with drinking water, skipping sodas or juices for the healthier alternative.

Don’t Skip Your Check-Up

Dental health begins at home, but your semi-annual check-ups with your dentist are crucial in preventing dental issues. Assure you are making, and keeping your twice-per-year dental appointments. At East Erie Dental, our check-ups are tailored to the patient. We not only clean your teeth, but we also spend time examining for potential problems ranging from cavities to oral cancer. Your time in our chair is important, and we want to be sure you are seeing us at least twice per year to maintain your dental health.
